This course is devoted to major American narratives since 1960, which will be read both for their formal qualities and in relation to the social transformations of American culture. Students will make oral presentations on selected fictions, will take turns in sharing with the instructor the responsibility of facilitating class discussion, and will have to do library research on criticism for their final paper.

Oral presentations to the class, short papers based on them, a final research paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Course is designed primarily for juniors and seniors majoring in English or American Studies, with a demonstrated interest in American literature. A preregistered student who fails to attend the first class will be dropped. Class participation matters. A willingness to read novels slowly and closely will be helpful.
