Novels that contest and rewrite what counts as American
literature challenge nationally enshrined institutions like
democracy, individualism, racism. This course examines
various ways that writers have performed this cultural work
from Charles Chesnutt to Ann Petry, some more
self-consciously than others.
MAJOR READINGS
Selected authors such as Nella Larsen,
Richard Wright, Carlos Bulosan, Agnes Smedley, Lorraine
Hansberry as well as criticism by Hazel Carby, King-kok
Cheung and Gloria Anzaldua.

This course meets
the English department's historical knowledge requirement.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
