This course introduces to the literature of the Restoration
and 18th century within the important but often overlooked
contexts of material culture and the visual arts. Poetry,
prose, and drama will be examined alongside such forms of
cultural expression as 'polite' portrait painting, political
cartoons, landscape architecture, scientific instruments,
furniture design, and fashion.
MAJOR READINGS
Dryden, Bunyan, Behn, Finch, Congreve,
Locke, Defoe, Gay, Swift, Pope, Montagu, Johnson, Burke,
Gray, Goldsmith, Wollstonecraft; plus secondary material.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

This course meets
the English department's pre-1800 and historical knowledge
requirements.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
