This course examines Chinese diasporic literature in English by focusing on the cities these writers invoke and inhabit-- London, New York City, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Sydney. Cities function as material spaces and metropolises of the imagination. By attending to historical and linguistic particularities, we interrogate the term "Chinese Diaspora."

Two papers, mid-term, class presentation.

Open to non-majors, though prior exposure to literature courses preferable. This course meets the departments historical knowledge requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
