This course focuses on close reading of several great plays
of the Western tradition, with some attention to
contemporary trends as well. Leitmotifs running throughout
the course will include the nature of dramatic heroes
and antiheroes; considerations of genre--tragedy,
comedy, and everything in between; and realism as
myth--or why there's no such thing as realism (really). Not
for skimmers; students should expect to read play texts with
care and more than once.
