Shakespeare's career spans a troubled age that sees the
emergence of the modern state and the deconsecration of the
monarch, the invention of modern subjectivity, and the
interrogation of the patriarchal control of sexuality. This
course introduces students to the texts of Shakespeare's
plays, their major genres and themes of state, subject, and
family. It assumes no previous knowledge of Shakespeare.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Class attendance is required.
An in-class midterm and final and paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
This course counts toward the department's Pre-1800
requirement.
This course MAY NOT be taken if you have already taken
COL205/ENGL210.
