This course includes lectures with discussion tracing the
rise of American literature from 16th-century narratives of
exploration and conquest to the mid-19th century. Texts
will be situated within the context of major social and
cultural transformations. Texts to be studied will be drawn
from such writers as Cabeza de Vaca, John Underhill, John
Winthrop, Mary Rowlandson, Jonathan Edwards, Benjamin
Franklin, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, Frederick
Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and
Herman Melville.
