The American Short Story: Poe to Updike

Primarily a reading course, this survey of the American
short story from its early practitioners like Poe and
Hawthorne to Salinger and Updike. It is intended to
introduce students to the range and depth of American short
fiction and to its principal thematic concerns. Authors to
be read will include at least the following: Poe, Hawthorne,
Melville, James, Jewett, Cather, Chopin, Crane, Fitzgerald,
Hemingway, Faulkner, Porter, Welty, Wright, Hughes, Salinger
and Updike.
MAJOR READINGS
The readings will be principally, but not
exclusively, in the authors named.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
There will be a mid-term
examination: in addition there will be two papers (one
3-page and one 8-page) on stories by authors covered in the
course. Journals will be required of all students throughout
the semester.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
