ENGL176
NonFiction Narrative Writing
ENGL176 FA
Not Currently Offered
This is an intensive six-week course with lots of reading
and writing that fiction writers should find pertinent. The
form is memoir: how to write memoir without writing about
yourself. Students analyze memoirs and learn to write
them. The instructor lectures, encourages, and harangues.
Grammar and punctuation count. Student responsibilities
include four writing assignments, two narrative analysis
assignments. We meet partly at instructor's house on
campus, Wednesday evenings.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings in memoir.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments every week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students selected
from all classes, all majors. Instructor looks for interest
in the world outside the self, for clarity, self-control,
and originality. (Correct punctuation helps.) Leave
writing samples with the English Dept. Secretary no later
than NOON ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8. A CLASS LIST WILL BE
POSTED ON DEPARTMENTAL BULLETIN BOARD BY NOON ON WEDNESDAY,
SEPTEMBER 10. Drop/Add registration only.
The chances of a first-year student having learned enough
about literature to get into this class are awfully small.
