"The innocent eye sees nothing," goes one critical tag. The premise of this course is that only by a close study of our literary predecessors may we understand the resources available to us as contemporary poets. In helping each student to realize his or her individual voice, this course will combine free assignments with a study of (and exercises in) various forms and styles, as reflected in poetic practice from the fifteenth century to the present.

MAJOR READINGS

Ferguson, Salter, Stallworthy, THE NORTON
ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY (4th Edition, 1996)
Louise Gluck, THE WILD IRIS (Ecco Press, 1992)

1996)
Essays on poetry by miscellaneous authors (on reserve in
Library)
