Women's fiction stretches and refashions the genres of science fiction, realism, and magic realism to portray widely disparate visions of community. We will consider the following topics: the relation between individual and community, the role of cultural memory in constituting communities, and the influence of multiple axes of oppression. The works to be considered present community as a site of struggle rather than retreat, of conflict rather than harmony.
