Climate, Past and Future

Earth's climate is constantly changing. Understanding how
this change occurs is a complete and exciting scientific
challenge. The focus of this course will be past climate
and will include an introduction to the tools and techniques
that are used to interpret earth's climatic history. Climate
patterns for specific geologic periods, such as the
Cretaceous greenhouse and Pleistocene icehouse will be
discussed and evaluated in light of the geological evidence.
Future climate predictions, based on trends in historic
data, will also be included.

METEOROLOGY (optional).
Wallace Broecker, GLACIAL WORLD ACCORDING TO WALLY
Selected readings from the literature.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two (1 hour and final) exams
and two group poster presentations, several laboratory-style
homework and computer exercises.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
