Volcanoes of the Earth
E&ES108 SP

Active volcanoes are very complex natural systems. This
course will bring basic concepts from geology, chemistry and
physics to bear on the questions of why volcanoes occur and
behave the way they do. In the process, we will examine
some of their many influences on human affairs although
emphasis is on what makes these systems tick and how we know
about them.
MAJOR READINGS
Various texts and journal articles.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Class presentation and
participation, short lab/practical exercises, midterm and
final exams and term paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Designed for
freshmen. Not open to students who have had E&ES101.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
