Political Economy in Age of Keynes ECON247 SP

This interdisciplinary seminar is concerned with the historical evolution of large-scale forms of economic and political organization and the development of corresponding collectivist ideologies in the United States and Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the topics considered are the philosophical and practical aspects of markets and central planning, technocracy and social engineering, total war and its impact on economic and political institutions, the tension between the individual and the collective in complex societies and the Keynesian Revolution.

MAJOR READINGS

Substantial amounts of reserve reading in
economics, history, philosophy and law.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three essays, each 7 to 9 pages in length and a shorter final assignment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
