This course is essentially an extended application of the economics of organization to the study of enduring institutions of hunter-gather or societies, such as reciprocal exchange, common ownership, and sharing. Organizational theory is used to understand why these and other institutions vary in form across different hunter-gather societies. Time will be devoted to studies of the ethnographic record.

MAJOR READINGS

The text is: Kelly, Robert L. (1995) THE
FORAGING SPECTRUM. Most of the course material is from
assigned readings from both economics and anthropology.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short papers, a mid-term, and a final.
