This one-semester introduction to microeconomic analysis and its application to issues of public policy will focus on how resources are allocated in a market economy. Topics covered will include trade competition, monopoly, and the economic role of government.

MAJOR READINGS

Section 2: Stiglitz, PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS, second
edition

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

All sections: problem sets, midterm exam, final exam scheduled by the Registrar. Section 1: Two midterms. Section 2: Six homework assignments, two quizzes, and a final exam. Section 3: Two essays.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

A working knowledge of elementary high school algebra as established by passing the mathematics placement examination given to all freshmen, by completing MATH107 or a higher number course offered by the Wesleyan Mathematics Department, or by obtaining advanced placement in calculus. All sections: Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
