This seminar will introduce students to several ways of
looking at the dilemmas of identity in modern China and
Japan. The goal is to explore how various disciplines--such
as history, political science, literature and
music--conceive and describe a common subject. The
disintegration and re-invention of tradition in 20th-century
East Asia is the background against which we will explore
specific moments such as the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, the
Cultural Revolution, 1966-69, as well as expressions of
cultural contest embodied in the Japanese Imperial
institution, Okinawan fiction and in such musical
composition as the Yellow River Cantata. Throughout the
seminar, students will have an opportunity to interact with
various members of the East Asian faculty as well as to
develop their own research agenda.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings include:
NIETZSCHE
OE KENZABURO
