This tutorial traces the political economic debate on the
nature and viability of socialism from the 19th century to
the present. The key tasks of the course are to (1) arrive
at a workable definition of socialism, (2) identify the
fundamental issues as they have unfolded in the successive
stages of the debate, (3) relate these issues insofar as
possible to real-world experience with socialist and
communist societies, and finally (4) assess the present
state of the case for some of socialist economy.
