Particular attention will be paid to the conventions of romance and their persistence in European and American literature, taking account of definitions of romance by literary theoreticians. The course will emphasize medieval romances, but other works to be read will be drawn from among those of Apuleius, Chaucer, Malory, Ariosto, Shakespeare, Pushkin, Twain, Kafka, Tolkien and sundry other worthies both famed and forgotten.
