This course will examine both the theory and representation of love in the Western tradition. We will discuss the different ideas of love in their historical context but will also attempt to see whether there is a general idea of love as a phenomenon basic to human experience. Readings in philosophical and theoretical texts will be accompanied by the reading of famous love stories, and perhaps the viewing of some of them on film.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short papers and one longer paper. An oral presentation may be substituted for one of the short papers.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
