This course examines two contesting paradigms, or models, of education in the Western tradition from classical antiquity to the near present. What has education meant in different cultural domains? How are we to understand the relationship between teaching and learning? To what end or purpose? Who should be taught and how? And how has the notion of essential knowledge evolved over time? Although these questions are posed in historical context, our ultimate objective is to clarify fundamental issues involved in current proposals for educational reform.
