This course investigates chemical aspects of the laws of thermodynamics, free energy, chemical potential and chemical equilibria; thermodynamic analysis of changes of state in pure systems and mixtures; phase diagrams; thermodynamics of chemical reactions; introduction to statistical mechanics. A basic undergraduate physical chemistry course. Although this course is usually taken by chemistry majors in the semester following CHEM337, it may be elected without CHEM337 by MB&B majors and others.
