A continuation of BIOL205, this course will begin with transmission genetics including linkage, recombinational mapping, and chromosomal aberrations, building to more complex topics including human gene mapping, immunogenetics, behavorial genetics and developmental genetics. The second half of the course will use the foundation already created to introduce the cellular and genetic basis of development. Following a discussion of diversity of organisms and cell types, we will begin with gametogenesis and fertilization and proceed through gastrulation and organogenesis. Aging, control of gene expression, cancer and development will be among the topics discussed.

MAJOR READINGS

Text to be announced.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four hour exams and one final examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students must take BIOL206 and BIOL216 concurrently. You must sign up for each course separately. Students, especially those intending to major in biology, should have taken or be taking chemistry. Students planning to major in biology, neuroscience and behavior, or molecular biology and biochemistry and students who are planning to apply to medical school are strongly advised to take the course for a letter grade. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
