Astronomy & Galactic Kinematics

This course prepares and requires students to use the
refracting telescope of the Van Vleck Observatory without
supervision. Astronomeric research is covered, with
emphasis on the observatory programs that determine stellar
positions, parallaxes and proper motions and their relations
to the structure and dynamics of our Milky Way Galaxy. Some
topics in galactic structure and kinematics are also
covered.
MAJOR READINGS
Several review papers and portions of
textbooks.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several hours examinations
will be given. An extensive familiarity with the Van Vleck
refractor and measuring techniques are required in order to
pass the course.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students are
expected to participate regularly on the observing program
of the refractor.
ASTR155 or the equivalent is necessary to take this course.
