This course in astronomical research uses the Perkin
telescope and its automated photometer. Topics include
practical and theoretical aspects of astronomical
photometry, data analysis and interpretation, telescope use,
automation techniques including the computer language FORTH
and the nature of variability in stars with active
chromospheres.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
No examinations. Several
projects involving the acquisition, analysis and
interpretation of photometric data.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is a course
designed to involve interested students in modern
astronomical research using the highly automated photometry
equipment attached to the Perkin telescope. Data can only
be obtained on clear nights, and all students will have to
set aside one full night per week during which they will be
expected to use the telescope, if weather permits. It is
intended that the data obtained will be of sufficiently high
quality and interest to warrant publication in an
astronomical journal. At present, the main focus of the
observations is on stars in their formative stages; in
particular, their irregular light and color changes.
Permission to enroll in the course will be given to students
who show strong interest and aptitude for astronomical work
as indicated by performance in Astronomy 155 and 157.
Astronomy majors or intended majors should enroll in this
course.
