This course reviews modern astronomical observing techniques, focusing primarily on optical observations. Topics will include a complete description of the use of digital detectors for imaging, photometry and spectroscopy in a wide variety of applications. Data acquisition, image processing and subsequent analysis will be discussed. Students will gain hands-on experience with the telescopes, instruments and computers at Van Vleck Observatory, carrying out actual observations. As time permits, the status of astronomical observations in the radio, near- and far-infrared, ultraviolet, and x-ray regions of the spectrum will also be covered.
