This course is a general introduction to astronomy. We begin by considering the basic principles with which all astronomers are familiar. Then, we apply these principles to the phenomena we observe in order to gain a more thorough understanding of planets, stars, and galaxies. In particular, we will concentrate on the concept of 'stellar populations' and its relevance to the determination of basic properties such as distances, ages, and chemical compositions.

MAJOR READINGS

One textbook.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two term tests, one final, plus weekly laboratory assignments.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a general education course meant for non-science majors. Although the majority of the course will be qualitative, there will be some high-school level mathematics such as trigonometry and algebra. There are weekly laboratory assignments and meetings associated with the course, some of which will be at night so that objects may be viewed through telescopes at the Van Vleck Observatory.
