Integrated Painting and Drawing

This intermediate-level studio course focuses on ways in
which painting and drawing can inform and enrich each other.
Working in a range of painting and drawing media, students
may concentrate in either painting or drawing but will be
expected to do some work in each area. Students will keep a
sketchbook/journal. Course work includes readings from
artists' writings; discussion of the sources of visual
imagery in observation, memory, imagination, conceptual and
formal issues, and museum trips.

A SOURCE BOOK BY ARTISTS AND CRITICS, University of
California Press, 1968
Nathan Goldstein, PAINTING: VISUAL AND TECHNICAL
FUNDAMENTALS, Prentice Hall, 1979
A list of suggested readings will also be distributed.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Individual and group critiques
throughout the semester. Sketchbook/journals will be
collected three times during the semester.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Permission of the
instructor and a portfolio review are required. This course
is intended for juniors and seniors who have fulfilled the
prerequisites. Materials Fee: $75.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
