This introductory-level course in painting (oils) with emphasis on working from observation stresses the fundamentals of formal structure: color, composition, scale, format and paint manipulation. Individual and group critiques, museum trips and discussion of campus exhibitions when possible are included.

MAJOR READINGS

A list of suggested readings will be
distributed.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm portfolio review and final critique of paintings. A minimum of eight hours of independent studio work is required each week.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Materials fee: $100.00. Selection by interview with instructor, at which time a portfolio containing no more than 10 works on paper may be presented. Interviews will take place during the Preregistration period (before the final Friday). Dates and times when interviews will occur will be posted outside the painting studio: Studio South, Room 103. A list of students accepted into the course will be posted the final Friday of Preregistration. Those students who have been accepted into the course must pick up a Permission of Instructor form that Friday in Studio South, 103 by 4:00 p.m. Students who preregister during In-semester should contact the Secretary of the Art Department for details.
