The Indian Temple
ARHA385 FA
Not Currently Offered
Starting with monuments of the Kushan period (1st-2nd
century CE), this course traces the architectural evolution
of the Indian temple through to its culmination in the South
Indian temple cities of the Nayak period (17th century).
The point of departure is morphological and stylistic
analysis of the buildings themselves, which will then fuel
discussions on architectural symbolism, the relationship
between temple architecture and Hindu ritual, and the social
and political functions of temples.
