The founding of the New York Etching Club in 1877 marked the beginning of what is known today as the American Etching Revival. Inspired by nineteenth-century English and French etchers, the American painter-etchers were dedicated to producing creative works that expressed original ideas, rather than using etchings as a reproductive medium as had their predecessors. This seminar will examine issues of quality, style, and technique in printmaking, referring back--as the American etchers did--to the work of the master printmaker, Rembrandt van Rijn. In addition to weekly sessions in the Davison Art Center Print Room studying originals, students will be required to write four catalogue entries and one term paper. This will be preliminary work toward the development of a jointly-curated student exhibition to be held at the Davison Art Center in Fall 1999.
