This seminar focuses on the development of commercial and
residential architecture in Chicago during the late 19th and
early 20th centuries. Emphasis is placed on the emergence
of a regional school of architecture in relation to
inherited stylistic traditions, innovations in building
technique and surrounding conditions of urbanization. The
works of the major figures, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd
Wright are considered for their theoretical origins and
their contribution to later architecture in this century.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm examination,
research paper and class presentations of research.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Preference for
enrollment given to departmental majors, especially those in
history of art or in architecture. Prior completion of
ARHA246 and/or ARHA254 may be helpful, though these courses
are not formal prerequisites.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
