This course is an investigation of the painting, history and criticism of Edouard Manet's artistic career. We will focus upon such concepts as avant-garde painting practice, urbanism, modernity, gender, ethnicity, and politics and examine how these issues were both incorporated and resisted by Manet in his work.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short presentations, a 3-4 page writing assignment, and one long presentation based upon 12-15 pg research paper.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
