This seminar will examine developments in the history and theory of the visual arts (painting, sculpture and the graphic arts) in France, Germany, England, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States, from the 17th to the early 20th centuries, focusing in particular on how artists contributed to the invention and imaging of national history and identity in the modern European nation-state. Topics to be addressed will include changing modes of production and promotion; patterns of patronage; the status of the artist and concepts of genius and masterpiece; the invention of the artistic canon and the evolution of modernism as an aesthetic category.
