The arts of West and Central African societies are an integral part of community life. Art expresses ethical concepts and religious and philosophical ideals that may not be readily expressed in words. The visual arts offer important insight into indigenous belief systems. At the same time, appreciation of local religion sheds light on the function and meaning of art forms. We will take a case study approach and focus on several West African societies.

Midterm exam, research paper, oral presentation.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students are encouraged to see the instructor before the course begins. While not required, some background in anthropology, history of art, African studies or African religion would be useful. Preregistered students must attend the first class meeting or comunicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class or they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add for to the Registrar's Office. A New York City field trip is mandatory.
