The Archaeology of Belief in China ARHA291 SP

This course will provide an archaeologically based introduction to ancient Chinese belief, including the rise and early development of religious conceptualizations and philosophical traditions. Discussions will focus upon the interpretation of archaeological finds and ethnological materials augmented by evidence derived from various readings, including primary contemporary sources in translation. Topics to be treated include early zoomorphic divinities, Shang ancestral rites, the politico-religious beliefs of the Western Zhou, shamanism, and folk religion in traditional China.
