State-supported Australian cinema has commanded the attention of audiences all over the world. This course explores the unique links between nation, history, and film in the context of Australian culture. It discusses national cultural aspects as well as a universal aesthetic horizon in the production, meaning, form and style of Australian cinema. Films will include (subject to availability) Dr. Miller's MAD MAX trilogy; Schepisi's CHANT OF JIMMY BLACKSMITH; Beresford's BREAKER MORANT and DON'S PARTY; Weir's PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and GALLIPOLI; Armstrong's MY BRILLIANT CAREER and HIGH TIDE; Schultz's CAREFUL HE MIGHT HEAR YOU; Luhrmann's STRICTLY BALLROOM; Hogan's MURIEL'S WEDDING; Cox's MY FIRST WIFE; Campion's SWEETIE and THE PIANO.

At least one social science and/or film course prior to taking ANTH380. Laboratory fee $40. Screening every Tuesday at 7:30 pm at CFA. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
