The concepts of ethnic boundaries, the nation-state, and
group identity change with cultural context and
historical circumstance. In this course, students will
examine theories of ethnic and national identity and their
application in ethnographies and films of complex,
multi-ethnic societies. The literature touches on issues of
race, class, gender, and ideology in the construction of
citizenship and belonging across disciplinary as well as
national borders. The last section of the course looks at
globalism, migration, and transnationalism as culture,
people, identities, and boundaries move.
