This course will explore the development of culture in Mesoamerica from the development of settled agriculture to the arrival of the Spanish. The major culture areas of Mexico and Central America will be considered. Emphasis will be on the way anthropologically oriented archaeology has changed the interpretation of the creation of high culture in this area.

Preference to anthropology and Latin American Studies major.
