Film and Anthropology: Nonfiction Cinema ANTH285 SP

A comparative study of cultures through nonfiction film, the course emphasizes interpretation in film and anthropology. It approaches film as a mode of constructing reality. Concentrating on observational cinema and the film of ideas, we discuss the varieties and history of nonfiction film making. We explore the events and structures of everyday life, seeking access to similarities and differences among societies through a comparison of cultural meanings in filmed visual images. Films and readings are drawn from East Africa, South Asia, Europe and America and classics of nonfiction cinema.

Short papers, in-class midterm, longer take-home final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Although there are no fixed requirements some familiarity with film studies and social science analysis is desirable. Screenings on Tuesday evenings at the Cinema at 7:30 p.m. Lab fee $40.00
