This course introduces various intellectual systems that inform daily life in comtemporary Native American societies. The Native philosophies and aesthetics of the Pomo, Apache, Navago, Zuni and Hopi are considered through analysis of oral histories, personal narratives, autobiographies and artistic products. Particular focus is given to how these various philosophical systems inform cultural constructions of a sense of place, the human body, personhood, health, illness, gender and prophecy. The course closes with a look at misappropriations of American Indian spirituality by New Age practitioners.
