This course critically examines the assumption that culture is apolitical. We will survey a wide range of literature (proletarian, experimental, modernist, nativist) written in the Japanese empire during the 1920s, '30s and '40s. You will be asked to analyze the often contradictory representations of national identity, gender, landscape, and empire within the literary texts as we read them with and against overtly political texts of the period.
