This course follows the fortunes of Chinese women through
several stages of revolution and social change. Elite women
of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties serve
as the bench mark for later periods, in which reform of such
institutions as footbinding and concubinage loom large. The
course progresses up to the present. Literary voices provide
personal insight into the situation in the '90s, but we also
make use of non-literary materials in surveying such issues
as health, reproduction, work, property, and the urban/rural
divide.
