The Tale of Genji

Written almost a thousand years ago, the GENJI is the
supreme masterpiece of Japanese literature. We will
examine and discuss the GENJI using Seidensticker's
complete translation in relation to its historical and
cultural contexts.
MAJOR READINGS
THE TALE OF GENJI (unabridged Seidensticker
translation)
Other Japanese literary works contemporaneous with or
indebted to the GENJI.
English-language studies of the GENJI.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Class presentations, research
paper, final examination.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
No knowledge of the
Japanese language is required, but some background in East
Asian Studies or in literature is desirable. Regular
preparation and participation are essential.
