This course aims to introduce students to certain
pre-modern Japanese literary texts that gradually have
acquired the status of classics. We will consider how
aesthetics and power are represented in the texts and their
changing social function over time. No previous knowledge of
Japan or literary theory is required. Students unfamiliar
with Japanese history, however, are strongly urged to read
a good survey such as John Hall's JAPAN FROM PREHISTORY TO
MODERN TIMES or Sir George Sansom's JAPAN, A SHORT CULTURAL
HISTORY (on reserve).
