The Novel in East Asia

This course examines major works of modern Chinese and Japanese fiction in cultural context, both as distinctive expressions of experience through an imported literary mode and in relation to their own narrative traditions. Readings (in translation) will include stories and novels by Lu Hsun, Lao She, Soseki, Tanizaki and Kawabata. Modern Korean readings will be introduced for comparison. No knowledge of an Asian language is needed.
