Contemporary Ethnic Theater I

This course is designed to encourage students to critically
engage contemporary (primarily American) theater. In
addition to analyzing various playwrights, we will also
investigate the political significance and meaning of
ethnic theater. This class further seeks to confront
students with the practical challenges associated with
directing and producing. The readings, discussions, and
assignments intend to address all these objectives.
MAJOR READINGS
include George C. Wolfe, Anna Deavere Smith,
Arthur Kopit, Suzan-Lori Parks, Samuel Beckett, Adrienne
Kennedy, Irene Fornes
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly assignments and one
final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
