This class will examine the 20th century transformation of
African-American urban politics. Particular attention will
be paid to black mayors, the relationships between city
governments and business elites, and community politics.
Various strategies of political empowerment will be compared
and contrasted; various approaches to the relationships
between race, class and power will be explored.

available, freshmen will be admitted during the Drop/Add
period.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
