Art and Identity in the Black Atlantic World

This First-Year Initiative and seminar course explores
the relationship between material culture and identity. Art
and architecture play a central role in the definition of
both individual and group identity. This seminar will
select several case studies both from Africa and from the
African Diaspora that illustrate the phenomenon whereby
art expresses, symbolizes, or creates identity.

Four short papers, one term paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
There will be one
class trip to New York City, with Arts Bus, on a Saturday in
early October.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
