This course offers a critical engagement with postmodernity in historical, cultural, and feminist perspectives. The focus is on twentieth century social processes, conditions and crises across time and space, and with the implications of the "global" and "transnational" for variously situated women and men. The early weeks are organized around approaches to understanding modernity and postmodernity politically, economically, and culturally. We then move on to consider how the "condition of postmodernity" is creating and deepening faultlines of gender, class and color. This leads to a historical examination of commodities and commodification, and finally to a consideration of how contemporary crises of capitalism(s) can be understood culturally and pluralistically.
